Overview
Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort, favored by the Thai royal family and the Bangkok upper class. It sits 200km south of Bangkok on the Gulf coast — close enough for a long weekend escape, far enough to feel like a different world. The city has a refined, unhurried quality that sets it apart from every other destination in this guide.
The adult entertainment scene here is real but understated. Soi Bintabaht and the surrounding streets hold a compact strip of beer bars and go-go venues that punch well above their weight for a city this size. The clientele tends to be older expats, retired Europeans, and seasoned Thailand hands who have tired of the chaos in Pattaya and want the same entertainment in a calmer setting. If that describes you, Hua Hin might be your ideal base.
Standard Thai framework applies. The bar scene operates openly but is smaller and more discreet than Bangkok or Pattaya. Low police interference with adult venues.
Red Light Districts
Soi Bintabaht
Soi Bintabaht is Hua Hin's answer to Pattaya's Walking Street — but quieter, friendlier, and without the overwhelming scale. This short alley off Phetkasem Road is lined with open-air beer bars, a couple of go-go venues, and sports bars populated by long-stay expats. It's the social hub of Hua Hin's adult entertainment scene.
The atmosphere is relaxed. Nobody is chasing you down the street. Regulars sit at the same stools every night. Bar girls are friendly without being pushy. Prices are fair. It's the kind of place where you can arrive alone, get chatting at the bar, and end up staying three hours longer than planned. For its size, it delivers.

Ladyboy Scene
Very small. A few kathoey-friendly bars exist around the Soi Bintabaht area but this is not a destination for that scene. Pattaya is three hours away if that's the priority.
Where to Stay
City center: walking distance to the night market, bars, and the beach. Hua Hin Beach (north end): quieter, some good mid-range hotels. Khao Takiab (south): more local, cheaper, farther from nightlife. The main strip of resort hotels sits right on the beach in the city center — pricier but ideal location.
Safety & Scams
Bangkok is safe for tourists. The risks are almost entirely financial — know the scams before you land.
One of the safest cities in Thailand. Low crime, relaxed police presence, no aggressive tout culture. The main hazard is reckless driving on the roads between the city and nearby beaches. Exercise standard awareness at night around the bar area.
Tourist police hotline: 1155. English speakers available 24/7.
Getting Around
The town center is compact and walkable. Samlors (three-wheeled bicycle taxis) are charming for short hops. Songthaews run to nearby beaches and Khao Takiab. Grab works in the city. Renting a bicycle (฿100/day) or scooter (฿200-250/day) is the best way to explore the surrounding area.
Best Time to Go
November through April offers dry weather and calm seas. The Gulf of Thailand's east-facing coast means Hua Hin misses the worst of the southwest monsoon — it stays drier than Phuket in the rainy season. May to October brings some rain but rarely severe enough to ruin a trip. The shoulder months of May and October can be good value.
Cannabis
Thailand legalised recreational cannabis in 2022 — the first country in Southeast Asia to do so.
Dispensaries have opened in Hua Hin as they have across Thailand, mostly catering to the expat crowd. More discreet than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Consume privately.
