Japan's adult entertainment industry is one of the most sophisticated and strictly segmented in the world. Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is the largest red-light district in Asia — a densely packed square kilometre of hostess bars, cabarets, host clubs, soaplands, and image clubs that operates openly despite theoretically strict laws. The gap between law and practice in Japan is nowhere more visible than here.

The industry operates on a tiered system. At the top end, hostess bars charge thousands of dollars per evening for the company of women trained to pour drinks, flatter, and entertain. Below that, image clubs and fashion health establishments offer a range of services with a precision that reflects the Japanese aptitude for categorisation. At the bottom of the price scale, soaplands — bathhouses where full service has been an open secret for decades — operate in designated zones across Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities.

Navigating Japan's scene as a foreigner is harder than Thailand or the Philippines. The language barrier is real, many establishments operate a no-foreigner policy either explicitly or in practice, and prices are significantly higher across the board. Tokyo's Kabukicho is the most accessible for first-timers — some bars actively court foreign clientele and English signage is common. Osaka's Tobita Shinchi is worth knowing about if you venture west: a different atmosphere, more traditional, very Japanese.

Budget accordingly. Japan is expensive. A night out in a hostess bar can easily run $200–500 before you've considered accommodation.
